The Olympics may be over, but the memories of the heroic victories and harrowing defeats remain. As breathtaking as the Olympics were, the moments experienced by former Wildcat Anthony Davis were the most poignant of all for Kentucky fans. And among those awe-inspiring moments, five stood out to the discerning eye as the golden examples of Davis’ Olympics journey.
5. He is selected for Team USA
Davis barely made it onto the Olympics team. Between his youth, a nagging ankle injury, and his spot being filled, it seemed as if Davis’ first trip to the games was going to have to wait another four years. But luck turned his way with Blake Griffin’s withdrawal. Davis was selected and fans rejoiced. It was a total surprise and the first piece of the Anthony Davis Olympics puzzle.
4. He scores 12 points on perfect shooting
Anthony didn’t get a lot of minutes on the court in the Olympics. He played with NBA superstars, and really only found playing time near the end of blowouts. But Team USA’s battering of Tunisia provided Davis with 14 minutes to shine. And shine he did, scoring 12 points on 5/5 shooting from the field and 2/2 from the line. Davis was once again the alley-oop master, and this time, it was on the world stage.
3. The ball in his hands when time runs out
Davis has a trend for finding himself in the right place at the right time, and he did it again as the final seconds ticked off the clock in Team USA’s victory over Spain to claim a gold medal. Davis found the game’s ball making its way to him, he snatched the final rebound, the ball was in his hands as the buzzer sounded. Anthony Davis may not have played a major role in the gold medal advance, but he found a way to finish it off and place himself front-and-center for all to see when it counted.
2. He forgets his jersey
It’s not hard to imagine Anthony Davis being teased alongside his Olympics teammates. He is the wide-eye rookie, after all. And that was made apparent when Davis’ teammates played a prank on the young star, telling him to sub-in to the game despite a lack of approval from his coach. Davis popped off the bench, marched his way over to the scorer’s table, and only then realized he wasn’t wearing his game jersey. A little prank turned into one of the most laughable moments of the Olympics and a real symbol of Davis’ light-hearted attitude and lacking experience.
1. The gold medal is draped over his neck
When it comes to memorable moments at the Olympics, the gold medal ceremony always takes the prize. Anthony Davis cracked a subtle smile when the medal was placed around his neck, clearly experiencing a moment beyond his wildest dreams.
“It’s a great feeling,” Davis said after winning the gold medal game. “It feels like the national championship all over.”
