How are there UK fans that still aren’t happy with Coach Cal’s three years?

I was still basking in the glow of our recently obtained 8th National Chapionship when I awoke to the news that Coach Cal had just signed his fourth strait #1 recruiting class. OH MAN !! I could not wait to get to work and delight in some conversation about how our Cats were so much better than the rest of the world it’s not even fair.

I’m not 100% sure my feet were even touching the as I glided in the doors to work. Who do i see first? Why it’s none other than my good friend random person. “Why hello” i say to random person. “Sup?” he replies. “Buddy did you hear the epic news? Cal just got us the 4th consecutive #1 recruiting class” I said through beaming pride. “Yeah, well he better start doing a little more with these classes. 4 strait top classes, 14 NBA players and all he has to show for it is 1 stinking championship” he retorts as he drives away on his forklift that some how always makes me think of the Doozers from Fraggle Rock. Anyway i chalk it up as random person having a bad day. Not gonna ruin my sunshine, we got the first in whats sure to be 8 consecutive championships under Coach Cal, especially since he had just brought us in another group of talented kids who really seem like they wanna play here.

Oh good, there’s random person #2. “Hey Hey random person 2″ I shout to get his attention. “Sup” he replies. (So you should know my memory for peoples actual polite salutations not the best in the world so I always assume it’s “Sup?”) Anyway i digress, “So random person 2, did yu hear the news?” i asked. “Yeah i did. And i hafta tell you I’m getting a little tired of all these one and doners coming in and bolting for the league, leaving us with nothing to show for it.” he responds. “Dude, (yes i still use dude) what do you mean? First he obviously hasnt won a championship with his fourth class because they haven’t even got here yet. So you can only count 3 classes, and the worst of those classes was a a 2 loss Elite Eight team with 5 first round draft picks for the first time in the history of any school ever?” I pleaded. To which he blabbers “Yeah but these kids dont care about that, they are only putting in their time for a year so they can leave to be millionaires. They dont care if they win one single game here as long as their stats are good”  It’s at this point i walk off so as not to suffer a stroke at work.

So i mention this to get to my real point. You have a favorite team, any team. To me and the majority of the people who are reading this, that favorite team is the Kentucky Wildcats. You have the right to support, and i use that word loosely here, your team in any way you seem appropriate. But, what i can’t make myself understand here is why are you so bitter at our succes? Why are you so quick to say “We should have won by more” or “He needs to use more players” instead of “Wow what a win!” .

Hey, i get it. You want perfection. You want to win every game 100 – 0, with the walk-ons playing the final 31 minutes because the game is so out of hand. But lets be realistic here, there’s alot of parity in college basketball these days. I mean, it’s just as likely that Butler goes to back to back championship games as it is for North Carolina or Duke to do it.

Yet these first 3 years with Calipari, we have a 2 loss #1 ranked UK team that was upset in the Elite Eight. We have an overachieving team of 6 deep that makes it to the Final Four by upsetting UNC and Ohio State back to back before barely losing to eventual champion UConn by 1 point. And you have last years coup de grace, a near perfect juggernaut that steamrolled everybody before bringing home #8. And oh yeah 3 years of not ever losing at home. 3 years of either the S.E.C. regular seaon or S.E.C. tournament championship.

There isnt a team anywhere that wouldn’t change their last 3 seasons for ours. Yet you’re gonna sit back and belly ache that we should win every game, every year using nothing but Kentucky born farm kids that don’t really have talent but make up for it by “wanting it more”. Kids that really want the college education only, they wouldn’t go to the NBA if they begged. Kids that want to put in 4 years of college, win 4 championships and then graduate with a 4.o and run home and start farming.

Well you can have your dreams of a perfect world. I’ll just enjoy watching every game. Cheering like mad every time we when, and blaming the evil referees when we lose. But in the end, we have arrived at the same result…..we are cheering for the greatest team in the world. I’m just not angry about it. Go Big Blue!!!!!
