Dan Dakich has been stirring up trouble with the BBN, and this time he’s accusing John Calipari and Kentucky of a recruiting violation. Dakich is an Indiana legend and a former assistant coach under Bobby Knight. He claimed that he heard from some “sources” that 2014 recruit Trey Lyles was on campus prior to backing out of his commitment with Indiana. Visiting another school while you are committed is not the issue. The problem at hand is whether or not Lyles visited Kentucky during a recruiting dead period, which is a violation of NCAA rules.
Dakich’s “sources” claim that in late July or perhaps the very beginning of August was when Lyles was supposedly on UK’s campus. He states that nobody told him Lyles was visiting the coaches or anything of that nature, but he was indeed in Lexington. Lyles committed to Tom Crean and the University of Indiana very early in his recruiting process. He felt the need to reopen his recruitment and experience the full process. Lyles’ father fired back at Dakich stating that his son just wanted to know what it was like to be recruited.
Lyles’ father calls the claims against his son “dumb”, and “retarded”. He also states the he has no idea why Dan Dakich would want to comment on his son’s recruitment. Why is he spreading the lies? Dakich tried to backtrack in a later interview saying that he didn’t have any idea that his claims against Lyles could result in an NCAA violation. Even though Dakich has a son of his own that is being recruited a little, he has no idea about the rules. He was only an assistant coach, how could he know?
Dakich went on to defend himself by saying that he was just simply trying to alert the fanbase that the kid has moved on since he removed himself from the Indiana program. He stated the passionate fans needed to know the information. I know when it comes to Kentucky recruiting, I usually have a pretty good handle on the rumors around our program. I can’t imagine why I would need some former assistant coach or someone hovering around a program to feel the need to tell me about a recruit “moving on”.
Since reopening his recruitment, Lyles has only visited two schools. He’s been to Butler, and then to Kentucky. His Kentucky visit was only a week ago, and that was the first time he or his father had ever met John Calipari or any of the coaching staff. Lyle’s father recently stated that he wish everything could work out for his son, and he could be wearing Kentucky blue. Lyles plans to host a few more schools and enjoy his recruiting process before making a decison. Programs like Michigan State, Florida, and Louisville are also in the mix for a visit.
