After getting swept by Mississippi State just last weekend, the UK Wildcats came back and took care of business against the Bulldogs in the SEC Tournament. Many believed that MSU was the hottest team in the tournament and that a win over UK could propel them to a host site instead of the Cats. But, Jerad Grundy allowed just one run in six innings of work and Thomas McCarthy delivered three doubles as UK went on to win, 5-1.
With the win the Cats will now await the winner of the LSU/Mississippi State game, which is to be played on Friday. The Wildcats will get the day off and next play on Saturday. Kentucky is now in the semifinals and once you get in the semis the tournament becomes single elimination. So, now it’s two wins to a SEC Tournament championship. It would be the first in UK history.
The two wins in tournament play is the most for Kentucky since 1996 and they will also finish in the top four for the first time in history. Their previous best finish was fifth, which they accomplished in 2000 and 2008.
