Four more days until the world blows up as UK meets Louisville in the Final Four. Two historic rivals that absolutely hate each other. Now, for the past three years we have seen this new twist in the rivalry – John Calipari vs. Rick Pitino. There has always been this “rift” between the coaches and neither one will really come out and say why they “dislike” each other. Maybe they don’t… Maybe it’s just for show… either way it just adds more fuel to this already burning fire. So, with four days left before the Final Four showdown in Blue Orleans we’ve decided to, each day, provide you with our Final Four breakdown of these two coaches.
Day 1: The Fans
One of the reasons this coaching rivalry continues to pick up steam is because of the fans. Pitino brought UK Basketball back to where it rightfully should be (you know the stats). Because of this, fans adored the man. He was “their” coach. After the ’97 season he bolted for the Celtics and left the fans behind. Following a brief stint in the NBA he returned to coach the Cards, this was not good. Not only did he “ditch” the Cats but then returned to coach the most hated team of all for Cats fans. The sting didn’t go away, until about three years ago. Coach Cal entered the picture and reminded fans of the good ole’ days of being the most dominant team in the land. Two Final Four appearances in three years, fans are beginning to forget about Coach Pitino. The sting will be completely healed if Coach Cal can beat Pitino in the Final Four and get that ever elusive eighth National Championship. Love him or hate him, Coach Pitino once was a Wildcat. Have the fans forgiven him for what he did? Tough to say. Most have a hard time and think like this guy:
Obviously you can’t argue with him… it’s pure jealousy… or something like that.
